April Bloomfield Recipes for NY Times

Early in spring I photographed two recipes from April Bloomfield's new cookbook, A Girl and Her Greens, for the New York Times. I like that the recipes from this book are veggie based but not all are strictly vegetarian. For example, April uses anchovies to give her whole pot-roasted cauliflower  (pictured below) a lift. She has a refreshing take on cooking with vegetables that I very much appreciate. And for the record, these boiled potatoes with butter and mint get top marks in my book!

Lucy Fagella's Home Tour

Artist's homes are always so unique and inspiring. I may be biased, as I'm an artist myself, but in all my years of shooting interiors I have always found creative people's homes to be the most interesting spaces to photograph. And another that follows suit is potter, Lucy Fagella's farmhouse in Western Mass.

It's charming, cozy, warm, bright, inviting...I could go on. Lucy and her partner, Terri redid the kitchen using wood and glass from an old barn that was torn down on the property when they moved in. They also renovated the barn attached to the home into Lucy's pottery studio. It once housed hay and tractor equipment and is now a beautiful space for Lucy to work in and teach her pottery classes. They have a large garden, a greenhouse and chickens that sustain them for the majority of the year.

Lucy was also kind enough to let me watch her work. I had never seen a potter throw before so I was slightly freaking out with excitement while I was watching her do her thing. Lucy is incredibly talented and I love her pottery. The green/blue hues she uses are so soothing..I drink my morning tea out of one of her mugs every morning and it makes my day!

Taproot: WILD

I've been a contributing photographer for Taproot Magazine for a while now and it's such a joy to work with them. There are some really incredible people behind that publication and I especially love that it is ad-free and reader supported. The pages are filled with great stories and I'm quite honored that I get to be a part of it. You can usually find my photographs accompanying Ashley English's recipes, which I must say are quite amazing. Although I've never met Ashley in person (but I hope to someday!) we are web friends and she is a really sweet, talented woman. And again, I'm honored to photograph her recipes.

Here are my photos for Ashley's piece, Wild within Reach, in the current issue of Taproot Magazine. To get the full recipes you can purchase the issue here.

Pasta with Morels, Peas and Parmesan for the NY Times

image438.jpg

Last week I was super excited to have this shot (above) on the front cover of the New York Times Food section! It's an ingredient shot for Mark Bittman's piece about cooking with morels and peas to make a great springtime pasta dish. Yes, morels are very pricy, but as Bittman suggests, a few of these guys go a long way. And, really this is the perfect time to make this dish, the farmer's market is booming with fresh peas. I also used fresh pasta from Eataly making this meal even more delicious.

Kips Bay

I absolutely love photographing designer show houses! It's so much fun to watch the designers transform their rooms into a beautiful piece of art. This year I covered Kips Bay for Houzz again and it was quite stunning. I love seeing what designers do when they don't have a client to please.

Pattern was definitely a theme throughout the house and I love that a lot of the designers incorporated bold colors into their rooms. Here are a few of my favorites from this year's house and to see the full article, on Houzz, with all the rooms and sourcing info click here.

Summer Fruit Shrub

image447.jpg

I photographed Kim Severson's pretty summer fruit shrub for the New York Times a couple weeks ago. For those of you who may not be familiar with what a shrub is, it's a tart drinkable vinegar that is softened with sugar and plenty of time and then mixed with spirits, water or carbonated water.

It's very easy to make, great for summer and you can play around with different fruits, herbs and vegetables to switch up the flavor and make it either sweet or savory.

Check out the article, The Modern American Shrub, and get the recipe here.

Dyfari Interiors at AHA Showhouse

image143.jpg

Oh my goodness, you guys, check out this eye candy.

I had the pleasure of photographing Diane Guariglia's, of Dyfari Interiors, jaw dropping room at this year's Home Is Where The Heart Is Showhouse in Mill Neck, New York. The colors she used are so bold and juicy, I seriously didn't want to leave and I love that this showhouse benefits the American Heart Association.  Diane teamed up with Robert Allen and Beacon Hill for these gorgeous fabrics.

If you have a chance to visit the home, I strongly recommend it! You will love seeing Diane's room in person and the rest of the house is just as beautiful.
